Spain, among the most attractive European countries to invest

Investment projects in the country have grown by 2% in the last year.

Foreign investment (FDI) in Europe is managing to leave behind the economic crisis caused by Covid-19 and has closed 2021 with a 5% increase in the number of projects announced compared to the data registered in 2020 , according to the latest EY European Attractiveness Survey report.

As far as Spain is concerned, it remains one of the favorite countries for investors, to such an extent that it occupies the fourth position at the European level with 361 foreign investment projects, which is 2% more compared to 2020. Despite That the data represents growth is still a long way from the figures recorded before the pandemic, when 486 projects were reached in Spain.

By autonomous communities, they have led the classification of projects used in 2021: Madrid (150), Catalonia (89), Andalusia (46), Valencia Community (24), Aragon (12), Castilla La Mancha (10), Castilla y León (9), the Basque Country (8), Galicia and Extremadura (3 each) and Murcia, the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands (2 each). By sectors, Software & IT Services (76), Transport and Logistics (44) and Finance (39) were the most developed.

“Keeping the fourth position in Europe in terms of attractive foreign investors for another year is still a sign of Spain’s high competitiveness in the European market. And, therefore, that it continues to play in the first division among the countries that have the best qualities to attract It is an internal market made up of 47 million consumers, to which must be added the arrival of 68 million international tourists each year,” Curro Rahola, partner responsible for EY Markets, told elEcononomista.es.

The consultant’s expert highlights that foreign investment in Spain has been a determining factor for economic development in recent decades, except for the stoppage caused by the pandemic.

“Despite the circumstances and all the duties that we still have to do, Spain continues to be a competitive country and, above all, with great growth potential. Factors such as its benevolent climate contribute to boosting its attractiveness for investors in sectors such as the tourism, and they are an opportunity for others, such as renewables, where we already occupy the ninth position in the world in investor attractiveness”, he argues.

“Other relevant factors are also its relative legal, social, economic stability, or the recognized health system,” concludes Rahola.
